More Than an Exhibition: A Story of Courage, Connection, and Becoming

I needed two full days after the opening of “The Things We Learn to Ignore”, curated by Alicia Doel, to truly sit down and process everything I had experienced. Some exhibitions stay with you for a moment - this one lingered, unfolded slowly, and kept speaking long after the doors had closed.

Back in January, I met a young woman from the university. She described herself as an introvert, yet there was something quietly powerful about her. She spoke about her artistic journey with such honesty and determination, and despite her self-proclaimed shyness, she had this undeniable drive to connect - to reach out to local artists, to listen, to learn, and to tell their stories.

We met over coffee, and as the conversation unfolded, so did her vision. I remember leaving that meeting with a strong feeling: she was someone who could go far. Not just because of talent, but because of courage - the kind that exists beneath the surface, steady and persistent.

That’s when I made the decision. I wanted to give her an opportunity - not just to create, but to challenge herself. To step into something bigger. So I offered her the chance to curate an exhibition at our gallery. The concept, the theme, the direction - everything would be in her hands.

Did she do a good job?

No.

She did something far more meaningful than that.

She poured her entire heart into it.

Every detail, every artist she brought together, every story that filled the space - it all carried her dedication. The exhibition wasn’t just a display of artwork; it was a reflection of connection, trust, and vulnerability. The artists were incredible, each bringing their own voice, yet somehow existing in harmony within her vision.

What she created wasn’t perfection - it was authenticity. And that’s far more powerful.

I have no doubt that she will go so far. This is only the beginning of her journey, and I feel incredibly grateful to have witnessed this first step. I truly hope this is not the last time we work together.
